Voters narrow field in Bois Forte primary election

NETT LAKE — Bois Forte voters narrowed the field in two Tribal Council races during Tuesday’s primary election, determining June matchups for secretary/treasurer and District II representative.
In the secretary/treasurer race, former council member David C. Morrison Sr. finished first with 147 votes, or 34.03 percent, followed by incumbent Tara Geshick with 113 votes, or 26.16 percent. The two will advance to the June 9 general election.
Jeffrey Mattson placed third with 72 votes, or 16.67 percent, followed by Carol Burr with 62 votes, or 14.35 percent, and Peter “Chief” Boney with 31 votes, or 7.18 percent.
Morrison carried three of the four precincts, including Nett Lake, Vermilion, and Minneapolis, while Geshick’s strongest showing came in Duluth. Morrison also edged Geshick in absentee voting, helping secure his top finish in the overall voting.
A total of 432 ballots were cast in the race, including seven spoiled ballots.
In the District II representative race, incumbent Robert Moyer Jr. led the field with 85 votes, or 44.04 percent, followed by Alanna K. Sherman with 65 votes, or 33.68 percent. Both candidates advance to the general election.
Tim O’Leary received 43 votes, or 22.28 percent, and was eliminated.
A total of 193 ballots were cast in the District II race.
There was no primary contest for the District I seat. Incumbent Shane Drift and challenger Mildred Holmes were the only candidates to file and will face each other in the upcoming general election.
The general election is scheduled for June 9.
