The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 call came in at 5:55 p.m. reporting that CPR had been started by family members. First responders arrived at the scene, transported the woman to shore, and she was then taken by ambulance to Cook Hospital. Efforts to revive her both at the scene and at the hospital were unsuccessful.
The sheriff’s office identified the victim as Marit Smaby-Nowlin, who was visiting the area on vacation. Authorities did not describe the death as a drowning.
The Lake Vermilion Fire Brigade, Cook Fire Department, and Cook Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
