I’ve been trying for months, years, to understand why anyone raised in our America would support Donald Trump and his disgusting policies and obvious lies. One explanation I heard some time ago was from a woman who proudly said in her southern accent, “We all love Trump ‘cuz he’s just like us.”
Maybe so, but if that’s true, it’s not such a good look for our beloved country. So, I’m still trying. No one from the other side has ever tried to explain. Why do people, otherwise decent people, especially those who call themselves “Christians,” choose to support this man.
Just last weekend, there was his response to the death of Robert Mueller, who suffered from Parkinson’s Disease and died at the age of 81. Mueller, a hero of the Vietnam War, who earned a Bronze Star with Valor and Purple Heart for rescuing wounded soldiers from a battlefield, was wounded himself. Rather than being sent home, he insisted on returning after his wounds had healed. He was appointed Director of the FBI a week before the 9/11 attack and led us through our subsequent recovery. Lily-livered Republicans love to complain about “Russia, Russia, Russia,” though a lot of people Mueller indicted pled or were found guilty by juries, including Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, George Papadopoulas, and Rick Gates, among others.
Trump heard the news of Mueller’s death and said, “Good. I’m glad.” This from the guy who bragged that avoiding STDs was his own personal Vietnam. So, if there’s a MAGA out there who can explain any of this to me, or change my mind about Donald Trump, I would be happy to listen.
